Man!  Can we just write off year 2020 and skip to 2021 already?  Picked up a not too heavy but bulky replacement bathroom vanity this past weekend and felt a twisting pressure and then a pop in my left (bow arm) elbow.  It hurt a bit but I wouldn't say excruciating.  I just had my arm in an awkward position when I lifted.  Was a little sore but when I awoke Sunday it was swollen and hot to the touch.  Didn't hurt too much flexing my arm, just sore.  Then later Sunday I strung one of my bows and started to draw her back.  Before I got 4 inches back - YOWZAA!!  Felt like someone stuck a knife in the back of my elbow.  Uh-Oh!  Called the Doc Yesterday.  He had me come in and had an Ortho Doc there take a look. Had an x-ray.  Tear in the tendon that comes down from the middle of the tricep and attaches to the sharp part of the elbow.  Doc said the pain was from impingement due to the swelling.  Aleeve and some ice brought the swelling down but I will not be able to put any pushing pressure on my elbow until that tare has healed and physical therapy has strengthen it.  Doc said I am looking at least 9 months to a year before he thinks it would be safe to draw a 45 pound bow back.
Woe is me!!  But I am determined to get better and shoot again.  Any of you folks been through something like this before?  I am looking for exercises that can build up tendons to resist weight.  I won't start exercises until they tell me I can, but wanted any advice I could get from Archers.

Thanks!

Steve

Which doctor told you, primary care or Ortho?  Definitely follow the doc's advise or physical therapist.

This stuff has helped me quite a bit.  I have a partially torn tendon in my bow shoulder.  Rest and ice is crucial.  I’ve had issues with my left elbow (bow arm) as well so I just switched to shooting lefty for a year.  That year off from right handed shooting was the ticket.  D942AE71-5474-4FDA-8E54-5EFB2E45061A.jpeg

I lost a year due to "jersey finger" in my string hand (I took 1000 shots over 2 days, my bad).  For an archery addict like myself, it was hell.  The best advice I can give you is to not rush things.  If you pull the bow too soon, you will be right back to day 1 of your recovery.

The one thing that I did find that really helped me was an ultrasound device.  While there is no medical study to prove that ultrasound helps heal tissue, there is plenty of lab evidence.  Anyway, I was desperate and spent the $300.00 for the probe.  While I had low expectations, it actually really helped.  Ultrasound for 10 minutes, then a super hot hot pad for another 15.  Repeat 3 times a day.  I've used that routine on other ligaments with equally good success.  A google search for "ultrasound elbow" will yield some food for thought.

And you are right, 2020 has been a doozie.  Whew!

We're all brothers (and sisters) in the bow.  I can feel your pain, and here's to hoping you feel better soon!

Thanks for the suggestions and well wishes Everyone.  I am certainly going to follow my Doctors advice.  I have decided that I am not going to let this get me down.  How would we get better if it weren't for challenges?  That's what I have been preaching to my Son in the Army.  Well now it's time to not just talk the talk but to walk the walk.
Thanks again Everyone!

I thought "jersey finger" was something you got from passing drivers on the NJ Turnpike 😎.

Very sorry to learn of your predicament. As stated follow the doctor's orders and any therapy exactly as given to you. Don't rush things, this is going to take time. Do the work and keep your chin up. Good luck.
