I understand the purpose of a tie breaker, but not when you already have a winner.  It could end up with the third place as the new winner. It might be better to regroup the shooters for the final round I you want a head to head match. It would be still possible for someone not in the final group to come in with a winning score.

An additional 6 targets are added to the championship round for the top 3 shooters. There is no winner until the additional 6 targets are shot. The 20 target score is added to the 6 target score. The 6 target SHOOTOFF will be set in an outside stadium setting for spectators to sit and watch. The 6 targets will be set in a natural so it Emulates a bow hunting scene.

I understand, having shot tournaments and 3D for years. It would be nice to add a little climax at the end. I think golf has approached it by placing the best shooter in the last group, in the final round. The lower scores are in the first group. By the time the top contestants reach the last hole, or in this case target the others can watch. Although, golf has an elimination round then three in the tournament, total of 72 holes, it would work in archery on two or three rounds. I think your idea is good one and should work.

Hud, The shooters are excited about adding the 6 targets to the championship round. If you follow USA Archery 3-D they have a similar shoot off for the top shooters. Calvin Smock(longbow) and Dewayne Martin(recurve) won a gold medal representing the USA in a shoot off 2 years ago.

As long as it is working, and people are excited and attendance holds up, do it.  I remember the boom days of NFAA field, NAA Target, FITA and Indoor archery and the excitement. I also remember when they started making it got harder, too hard for the weekend shooter.  The same thing happen with many 3 D shoots and attendance fell off.  It's tough for the average guy, gal and junior that isn't as motivated as the serious competitor to support something when it isn't as much fun. Partly it is because the don't get better, and the skill level between the average person and the elite competitor is too great.  I believe it hurt the sport years ago. Sometimes changing things helps hold people's interest, and it sounds like your doing it.

Hud,

I shot NFAA for nearly 30 years. I competed in everything from target, field, and 3-D so I‘be seen first hand what happens. The shooters that attend our events are very pleased with the approach TAS has taken by listening to the shooters. If you get a chance attended the TAS Bowhunter World Championships, we’re on our 6th year. Shooters that have been attending our events know they can shoot for fun by having their scorecard stamped “ Not Competing “. Those shooters still get to shoot all the same courses and can shoot the championship round on Sunday but they don’t have to turn in a score card or have their scores recorded. Something else that TAS offers is unlimited shooting for the weekend. The members of TAS feels that if shooter comes to the event they should be able to shoot as much as they want. At the Bowhunter World’s there’s the 40 target qualifying rounds plus a 20 target fun range. Over the past 3 years we’ve incorporated a dinner on Saturday where all the funds made goes to the local 4-H club. For less than 10.00 you get a main course, 2 sides, beverage, and desert. There’s definitely lots to do.

I will definitely try to make one.  There are a few big events out west like the Western States Traditional Rendezous, and the North American Longbow Safari, then the Traditional Bowhunters of OR, WA, ID, MT, CO, British Columbia and Alberta have events. Unfortunately, some do not update their website often, or to expand their membership like TAS.
