On my recent trip to Texas, I aquired a Black Swan 3 piece recurve. I already own a one piece BS recurve that I haven't shot for some time. I've been shooting with a glove for several years, used to use a SAM tab. With the recent discussion about Rick Barbee's tab I thought I would try my tab again.
I shoot with my tab first round with the one piece then shot the second round with my glove. I noticed that the glove was more quiet than the tab. I experimented with the 3 piece and my selfbow. Same results.
I'm not saying everyone will experience the same results but just wondering if anyone else may have noticed similar results?
BTW, the 3 piece shot good but I noticed I can't shoot it with my normal cant but have to hold it target style for good grouping.

That’s an interesting observation. I have never really given it any thought.

I have observed the same when I switch from my glove to a tab. My glove is nice and quite, but there is definitely more noise with the tab. I shoot glove 99.9% of the time. So those odd times I use a tab it really sticks out to me.

I think the layers of tab snap at release. I get the same results Eddie. Remember tho....this is a right at your ear. It is not very loud otherwise.

Noticed that with a Fred Eichler tab but not a Black Widow tab, though I barely used it. Switched over to a single piece Art Vincent tab and there was no sound at release. All three are split finger tabs.

Improper release may also be a reason for the sound.

No sound from the Hill glove of course.

I have been known to pluck.

Chuck, good point, didn't think about the layers.

Good to hear that others have noticed the same thing.

You aren't alone, Eddie.

Been there, still doing that. Occasionally.

I have found that a calf hair tab for me is much quieter than a cordovan or super leather tab. RC

Like RC, I prefer the calf hair tabs. Also, one that is too long seems to be louder than a shorter one. However, I am not sure that my hearing is sharp enough to be a good judge of loudness in this topic.

I've notice a "slapping" sound also some times. I have on some tabs that have 3 layers, removed a layer and "glued" the 2 remaining layers together, and this seemed to help.

Eddie are you shooting split or 3 under? I’ve definitely noticed that snappy sound from some tabs, it’s more pronounced shooting 3 under.

3 under. That's the way I was taught to shoot. I was also taught to string crawl but over time I have developed a focusing problem with my right eye and I now more 'point and shoot'.

I did a completely unscientific experiment this morning, shooting my Bateman split finger tab and then my glove, and my admittedly poor ears could discern no real difference between the two.

I have been TOLD that is often the result of the tab needing to be trimmed...barbee tabs are so small I doubt that is your case

If you are using a 1 piece tab (and sometimes even if you aren't) the slapping sound can be caused by the tab getting too far out on the fingertips allowing it to slap at release.

Eddie if that bow wouldn't group well with your usual cant it's a tuning or alignmnet thing, not a characteristic of the bow.

I shot gloves for many years then switched back to tabs. I honestly can’t say that I’ve noticed one noisier than the other.
