Saturday is freedom day for my dog.  Fred is a Griffon, a big running fuzzy bird dog.  During most of the year we go hit the public hunting grounds 2-3 times a week and he runs...and runs...and.  and i stump shoot till I'm dizzy.

But, from  April 15 til August 1, they are closed to off leash dogs.   Probably  a good thing, for nesting birds and other young, but for him, not so much.

Freedom day also means i get off my lazy butt and get out there again !    Wooohooo !

I already have several  slightly tweaked stand sites ready for the coming future hunts.

The highlight of my day is to go to some conservation land nearby, and let my dog [1/2 shepherd, 1/4 Rottweiler, and 1/4 Doberman] off leash. Brings a smile to both of us!

What...no pic of the pooch?
Miss my labs, I couldn't pick up a bow without them getting excited.
Have fun out there.

My situation is somewhat similar to yours in that my little 14-pound mini-Dachshund only gets exercise while I am stump shooting.  But I am a less generous master than you because my dog typically only gets good exercise once a week rather than 2 or 3 times per week.

With the exception of a brief daily half mile walk around our city block, my dog is cooped-up in a small apartment 6 days of the week.  But he gets to run totally free with four other dogs over 20 rural acres one day a week.

My mini-Dachshund Lucky becomes ecstatic when he observes me loading my boots, bow quiver, and bow into my Jeep.  When my friend and I begin stump shooting, my dog takes off across the 20 acres.  We do not see him for about an hour.  After about an hour he finds us and voluntarily rejoins us while staying underfoot (not in a bad way such that he interferes with our stump shooting) for the rest of the day while we are stump shooting.  It almost seems as though once he has gotten the far ranging running out of his system, he then wants to remain close to us in order to ensure that he does not get left behind.  Lucky gets to live free and unrestricted like a dog really should be able to live for about 5 to 7 hours per week.

I'll  post a picture from our next walk.  We ( a small group) left my house at 8am and got home about noon.  Much of the time in between Fred was working fields.  This was him that afternoon... 20200802_151618.jpg
