If it isn't life or death, it's no big deal.

CWD has been found in TN this past season. They're trying to control it but I think it will be a waste of time.

From what I know, CWD has never been found to be transferable to humans

You are correct Tim. No cases thus far. What these "experts" are saying is it's just a matter of time. Research suggest that the prion can "potentially" evolve and transfer to humans. Some monkeys have picked up CWD in studies when fed infected deer.

I really question their "evolution" theory. CWD and other prion diseases revolve around, as I understand it, a rogue or weird protein. It is not alive in the classic sense, again, as I understand it. If it isn't alive how does it evolve ?

I suspect, but obviously have no proof, that things like this act in a manner similar to seeding or spiking a batch of chemicals or pharmaceuticals that are prone to forming several styles of crystals (look up isomer and enantiomer) such that the seeding steers it to develop that same sort of crystaline structure (that is desired).

Just a guess, and there are a bunch of guesses out there.

Which begs the question "how much time does it take"?

Coloradans who live and farm within the CWD hot area along the South Platte River have been killing and eating deer their for all the years CWD has been known there and for who knows how many years before.  A study of brain disease of people who have lived there for years shows no differential in the occurrence of spontaneous prion based brain disease.

Another consideration is the apparent lack of cases of CWD jumping to other species outside of the cervids such as antelope and even the predators that eat eventually from every dead animal they come across!

But, who knows for sure?

Scrapie is the spongiform encephalopathy in sheep, it has been known to science since the early 1700's and has never been known to naturally affect humans. The CwD study where it was passed to a non human primate was not in a way humans currently use deer and it was one study. I don't eat the brain or spinal cord of a deer and work to minimize the amount of lymphatic tissue I come in contact with but would eat deer in a CWD area.

There are numerous forms of SEs, mostly pretty specific but last I heard BSE (bovine) was determined to have caused several human deaths by in the UK years ago. As I recollect anyway.

Dan,
By looking at your icon I wouldn’t think it’s CWD. Looks more like it’s from a bite of the Tse Tse fly and caused sleeping sickness. Lol. Seriously though, I’ve never seen or heard of a report done on the effects on domestic pets. Would be interested to know.
