Wood's (bow woods) strength to weight ratio  is roughly 10 times that of steel.  Interestingly, even balsa wood has a higher strength to weight ratio than steel.  Thus steel cannot compete with wood for cast.  Fiberglass on the other hand, is roughly 5 times higher than wood.  The writing was on the wall for them that wanted to read it.

I know this misses the point of the article.  But it makes me wonder about another point that was missed.  How it is that the folks that designed and built the steel bows didn't consider the basic fact that a bow made from steel would be inferior in its main purpose- to cast a fast arrow.
