Just saw an article this morning that Colorado will no longer offer over the counter archery license in many GMU's.  Archers must apply for limited licenses and I think specified for bull or cow.  The claim is that because of the dwindling elk herds there are too many archery hunters in the field.  This is news to me, even though archery has grown considerably I still think there are more gun hunters in the field than archers.  Considering that the archery harvest is only about 17% this makes no sense. The article said other hunters were complaining about too many archery hunters and I think this is probably the real reason.  They will not admit that bear predation on elk calves is the real reason for the dwindling elk herds.  Since the non hunters in Colorado got bear hunting over bait or with hounds outlawed our bear populations have exploded.

Longcruise, I read it in the Durango Herald.  You can pull it up online.  The article didn't go into a lot of detail.

I dunno.  I hunted Colorado a half dozen years ago, and it was overrun with hunters.  Of course, we were in a general unit, but I'd have to say the pressure (i.e., hunter numbers) was at least three times higher than it was 20-25 years ago in the same area, when I previously hunted Colorado.  And, now, few hunters walk much anymore.  They all have 4-wheelers, and they're running all over the place.

Fish and Game actually encourages 4-wheel use, I think.  Old two tracks, that one used to be able to drive a pick-up on years ago, have been closed to all but 4-wheeler traffic.  Never was much vehicle use of the two-tracks years ago.  I suppose it got worse and started damaging the landscape so the agency decided to restrict it to 4-wheelers.  Problem with that is one used to park the truck along side or at the end of the two-track.  The 4-wheelers just keep going up the mountainside.  Aside from taking away all sanctuary from the elk, it's just damned annoying to those who hoof it.

Well that is sad news.  When I hunted CO I was in a wilderness area that was very hard to get into (27 switchbacks to get 1 mile in elevation just to get up onto the plateau).  I only saw a few other hunters.  It was nice and we shot a small cow, but the pine beetle had pretty much decimated the woods.....was all standing deadfall and we decided to look to other greener areas.  Currently hunting in ID over the counter.  I don't want to be bothered about lottery and drawing.  All DIY anyway so it was nice to just buy the tags.  Shame.

The best hunting in WY is always limited quota areas, and wilderness and or limited access and or hiking in miles always improves the experience. Less hunters means more animals and yes maybe you don't get to hunt ever year but well worth loosing the crowds to me.

For a sport that is supposed to be loosing or at least not gaining numbers even a state with less than one million folks can get crowded during hunting season

That's a bummer.

Come to middle TN and shoot some deer, they're little but they're everywhere. You can shoot 3 antlerless per day!

James, I don't know about rifle hunters. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Dept hasn't updated their website for 2020 yet, it is still showing info for 2019.
