Just watched a video of a hunter taking a cape buffalo with an compound bow - perfect lung shot with a one arrow kill.  The compound was rated at 72# - of course, that is the draw wt. it requires to "break."  I wonder what draw wt. from a recurve or longbow would be sufficient to do the same.  I am thinking 65#???

PS - the hunter was "equipped" with all the techy crap money could buy.

Just wanted to add in that the shot was taken at only 25 yds.   Any traditional archer should be able to make that shot all day long, or should not be hunting with a bow.

I was in the hunt with Tim when he killed his Cape buffalo with his Black Widow recurve. It was 72# or 74#, can’t remember. One arrow kill, and it only went about 125yds!!!

Cello, I tend to agree with chuckc. A lot of us only shoot close up. Maybe longer range hunting is needed for ole Mbogo and other dangerous stuff, but not for whitetail deer. True, I am not proficient beyond 20 yards or so, and I've only killed a small handful of deer with a bow. However, I have never hit one that I didn't recover, and I never needed more than one arrow to do the job.

I would assume that CelloMan meant based on the size of the vitals on that size target...which I kinda agree with...if a hunter does not feel very confident he can hit the vitals of his query, say 9 out of 10 shots, he has no business pulling the string.
Of course we also know, that a lot of crap happens between that thought process and reality.

I also know that there is an ENORMOUS amount of difference of feeling confident on a foam target versus writing a check for a bad hit on a very expensive animal

Practice - practice - practice!  Also, on doing some further research on the topic, it appears that anyone wishing to pursue "dugga boy" should be become proficient with a 70# or heavier bow, for both lethal and legal reasons (country by country restrictions).  I received feed back on another site from an individual who claims to shoot with a 95# recurve and 105# longbow - a tad heavier than most to say the least!

Thank you Tim for this!
