Needing a break from the tedious tillering I decided to rough out the shelf and handle.

Looking very good Paul! [thumb]

I'm no selfbow expert but the tiller looks good from here.  It's always a little difficult to judge these things from photos on the screen but it looks very good.

Gotta say that your application of the one narrow strip of bamboo is working out better than I expected.  Thanks for the opportunity to observe.

Finished tillering  and ended up at 42# at 25", just where I wanted to be for now. Hope to settle in at 40# after finish sanding and shooting it for awhile. I toyed with the idea of not putting on any tip overlays but the tips are rather thin and so I decided to add some overlays for a little added strength since it is a all wood bow.  I am using gambel oak.

I still have a lot of sanding to do but am going to wait until I shoot it for awhile.  I am surprised and pleased that I have only lost 3/8" of the 1 3/4" backset that I glued in.

Man oh man, am I a happy camper today!! I had dug around in my archery stuff and found a B50 string to use to finish tillering the bow and last night took it out to try and shoot it.  I didn't have arrows of the right spine but finally found one that shot pretty good.  It had a little hand shock and I just wasn't really happy with the way it felt. I thought I am going to shoot it a little and then I got some more work to do to try to smooth this out.  My grandson is a great shot and I didn't want to come up with a bow that was shocky and hard to shoot because I didn't want to do anything to discourage him.

It has been my experience with my own bows that every time I change from a B50 string or even some fast flight to a Ultra Cam Skinny string is has completely changed the feel of the bow.  Hard to explain but they just feel and shoot completely different, smooth and crisp with no vibration.  So last night I twisted up a 6 strand Ultra Cam skinny string and tried it again today. My what a difference!! The shock is gone, the bow is crisp and boy does it ever spit out an arrow.  And the one arrow I have shoots like a dream. It seems to me to shoot as fast as my glass longbows.  Even though I have to short draw it with a floating anchor it shoots right where I am looking. It was so much fun shooting I had a hard time putting it down.  I have build several board bows, both full size and kid bows but have never ended up with even close to this one.

Can't wait for him to shoot it.
Like Steve said, hope it stays together!

10 yard shot.

Finally got around to taking a few pictures of the finish bow. This little bow continues to impress me. After tillering and shooting at least a 100 arrows it still maintains 1 3/16” reflex from the original 1 3/4”. All the other board bows I have built have eventually developed enough set to become string follow. It is very accurate and zips an arrow so fast I named it Spitfire. It is surprising to get such a great shooting bow from an oak board from Home Depot. My grandson is really happy with his bow and that is what it’s all about.

WOW !!!  That's a beauty!!  Best I've seen in a while.. Regarding the bamboo issues, i suggest you contact a few bamboo rod builders (e.g. Denis Menscer, Walt Carpenter, Dana Gray, Mark Aroner, Bob Taylor, etc.) for some tips on heat-working/filing/pressing the nodes.. Otherwise, there is plenty of bamboo rod information on the internet that may be useful..
Best,
Bob

Nice job, and beautiful finished bow.
I was just interested in what the final dimensions were?
Length, width / taper?
Thanks for the build-along. I enjoyed seeing how you had things set up in your shop along the way.
It looks like a good work space.
Cheers!

Thanks very much.
I was cutting up a number of staves at a friend furniture shop this weekend, and planning on backing a selfbow that missed the mark with bamboo.
I enjoyed your build-a-long a lot. Thanks very much for taking the time to do it.
Your finished bow not only looks good, but sounds like a lot of fun to shoot.
If your in need of any hardwood staves, I have some nice hickory, hornbeam, and a number of white ash splits for arrows. I think that the ash will make some nice heavy shafts.
Cheers!
Tim
